Album Review: Marlaena Moore – Because You Love Everything

Marlaena Moore’s Because You Love Everything is a quiet, introspective album that leans into subtlety rather than spectacle. It’s a record built on vulnerability and careful restraint, offering songs that feel personal and unpolished in a way that invites listeners into Moore’s world without demanding their attention.

Recorded in a basement during the pandemic with co-producer Scott “Monty” Munro, the album naturally carries a sense of closeness. The production is sparse but intentional, allowing each sound—whether a soft guitar strum or a distant synth—to feel purposeful. There’s no clutter here, just enough space for Moore’s songwriting to breathe.

“Teething” stands out as one of the album’s most affecting tracks. Moore’s voice barely rises above a whisper, conveying a fragile honesty as lo-fi acoustic strumming and understated synths create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and unsettling. It’s not flashy, but it lingers. Similarly, “Hungry for God” floats in a haze of soft beats and distant vocals, capturing a sense of unresolved yearning.

Other tracks, like “Running on Empty,” strip things back even further. It’s just Moore and her words, delivered with a quiet directness that feels reflective rather than confrontational. There’s a calm persistence throughout the album, as if Moore is sorting through thoughts without rushing to conclusions.

Munro’s production complements this mood. It’s subtle and restrained, allowing small details—a faint hum, a delicate guitar line—to surface naturally. Songs like “Pacer” and “Under Earth” move slowly and deliberately, encouraging listeners to sit with them rather than seek immediate payoff.

The title Because You Love Everything feels like a quiet affirmation. Moore has openly discussed her doubts about continuing in music, and this album is perhaps a response to that uncertainty. Not a bold comeback but a steady decision to keep creating. And that’s something worth celebrating.

To commemorate the album’s launch, Marlaena is set to perform live at La Sala Rossa in Montreal on January 24, 2025. Tickets are available here.
