If you drive in Ottawa, there’s a good chance you’ve noticed more and more speed cameras popping up all over the city.
These automated speed enforcement (ASE) cameras aren’t just keeping an eye on your speed — they’re also handing out some pretty hefty fines for anyone caught pushing the pedal a bit too far. So, if you’ve been wondering how Ottawa’s speed cameras work, what the fines look like and where they’re set up, we’ve got you covered.
Ottawa’s speed camera program started as part of the provincewide effort to make roads safer under Ontario’s Safer School Zones Act. In a pilot study conducted by the City, school zones equipped with ASEs saw compliance with speed limits increase by 200%, and the number of drivers exceeding the limit by 15 km/h or more dropped by 72%.
As of January 2025, the city has 60 ASE cameras — more than double the number it had just a year ago. In the last year, these cameras issued over 370,000 tickets to drivers caught speeding in high-risk areas.
Speed cameras in Ottawa are strategically placed in « community safety zones » — typically near schools and parks, but this can also include areas where excessive speeding has regularly been observed. If your car is caught speeding by an ASE, you’ll get a ticket in the mail addressed to the vehicle owner — no matter who was behind the wheel.
Since these cameras are all set up in community safety zones, the fines are automatically doubled, meaning that depending on how fast you’re going, you could be slapped with a fine of up to $720. Unlike regular speeding tickets, though, these don’t come with demerit points or impact your driving record, since the camera can’t tell who’s driving.
If you’re wondering how to spot these cameras, the City makes it pretty clear. Before any new ASE camera starts issuing tickets, a « coming soon » sign is installed for at least 90 days to give drivers a heads-up. Once the camera goes live, you’ll see a « municipal speed camera in use » sign at the location.
But if you’re wondering where exactly Ottawa’s speed cameras are located, we’ve rounded up the full list of spots below. Keep these in mind next time you hit the road!
