That’s because you can save by buying in bulk at Costco and get more bang for your buck.
Whether you’re shopping for just yourself or for the whole family, knowing the price breakdown for how much of an item you get can help you buy cheap groceries.
So, here are 12 products that are cheaper at Costco Canada stores than at Dollarama.
Honey Nut Cheerios
It costs $9.99 — when regularly priced — for a 1.15-kilogram box of Cheerios at Costco.
That breaks down to a price of just $0.66 per 100 grams.
Dollarama has boxes of Cheerios but in smaller sizes.
It costs $2.75 for a 292-gram box of Cheerios at Dollarama, which works out to $0.94 per 100 grams.
Kraft Dinner
Costco has a huge pack of Kraft Dinner so you can stock up on the Canadian classic.
It costs $15.99 for a pack of 12 340-gram boxes of Kraft Dinner at the wholesale retailer.
That breaks down to $1.33 per box and $0.39 per 100 grams.
You can get a 200-gram box of Kraft Dinner for $1.50 at Dollarama.
That works out to a cost of $0.75 per 100 grams.
If you were to buy the same amount of boxes from Dollarama that you get with the pack at Costco, it’d be $18.
Not to mention, you would also be getting less Kraft Dinner in each box because the Costco boxes are almost twice as big!
Chocolate chip granola bars
Kirkland Signature chewy chocolate chip granola bars cost $12.99 and you get a box of 64 bars that are 24 grams each.
That works out to a price breakdown of $0.20 per granola bar and $0.84 per 100 grams at Costco.
You can get name-brand Quaker chewy chocolate chip granola bars for $2.25 at Dollarama. It comes with five granola bars that are 24 grams each.
That price breaks down to $0.45 per bar and $1.87 per 100 grams at Dollarama.
So, Costco is cheaper when it comes to the price per granola bar and the price per 100 grams!
Chocolate dipped granola bars
You can get a pack of 48 chocolate-dipped granola bars that are 31 grams each for $17.99 at Costco.
This Kirkland Signature product has a price breakdown of $0.37 per bar and $1.20 per 100 grams.
At Dollarama, a 156-gram box of name-brand Quaker Dipps chocolate-dipped granola bars that comes with five bars costs $2.25.
That works out to $0.45 per bar and $1.44 per 100 grams.
Tea
If you’re a tea drinker, it might be more cost-effective to get tea bags at Costco instead of Dollarama.
You can get a 945-gram box of Tetley orange pekoe tea for $13.49 at Costco. The box comes with 300 tea bags.
That price breaks down to just $0.04 per tea bag and $1.42 per 100 grams.
You can get a 113-gram box of Tetley orange pekoe tea at Dollarama for $2.50. It comes with 36 tea bags.
That works out to a cost of $0.06 per tea bag and $2.21 per 100 grams.
The price breakdown for how much you pay for how much you get is almost 80 cents less at Costco than at Dollarama.
Peanut butter
It costs $10.49 for a two-kilogram jar of peanut butter at Costco which works out to $0.52 per 100 grams.
Dollarama as a smaller-sized jar of peanut butter — 500 grams — for $3.75.
That works out to a cost of $0.75 per 100 grams.
So, if you need peanut butter more often, the Costco product is cheaper.
To get the same amount as you do at Costco, you’d have to buy four jars at Dollarama and spend $15.
Froot Loops
You can get a 1.1-kilogram box of Froot Loops at Costco for $9.99, which works out to a cost of $0.90 per 100 grams.
At Dollarama, a smaller 230-gram box of Froot Loops costs $3.
You might think that’s cheaper because the price tag is lower, but when you break down that price by how much of the product you get, it actually costs $1.30 per 100 grams at Dollarama.
So, you save almost 50 cents for every 100 grams with the Costco product.
Granola bites
A bag of Made Good granola minis with 24 pouches that are 24 grams each costs $13.99 at Costco.
That works out to $2.42 per 100 grams for the Costco product.
It costs $3 for a 100-gram bag of Made Good granola minis at Dollarama, which means you pay $3 per 100 grams — almost 60 cents more than you would at Costco.
Vanilla extract
Costco has a two-pack of vanilla extract for $7.99 and each bottle is 455 millilitres.
That works out to a cost of $3.99 per bottle and $0.87 per 100 millilitres.
At Dollarama, it costs $2.25 for a 250-millilitre bottle of vanilla extract, which works out to $0.90 per 100 millilitres.
Even though the vanilla at Dollarama is cheaper on the price tag, you actually get more for less at Costco.
Oatmeal
It costs $17.99 — when regularly priced — for a 2.45-kilogram box of Quaker oatmeal at Costco, which works out to $0.73 per 100 grams.
Dollarama has a 344-gram box of Quaker oatmeal for $3, which breaks down to $0.87 per 100 grams.
Plus, the Costco box comes with three flavours, so you get more oatmeal and more variety for less.
Mini chocolate chip cookies
You can get a box of Pillsbury mini chocolate chip cookies for $16.99 at Costco. This pack comes with 28 pouches that are 42 grams each.
That’s a price breakdown of just $0.60 per pouch and $1.44 per 100 grams at Costco.
At Dollarama, name brand Chips Ahoy! mini chocolate chip cookies cost $2.75 for a box of six 26-gram pouches.
That works out to $0.45 per pouch and $1.76 per 100 grams.
Each pouch in the Chips Ahoy! box costs less but you get more cookies for a cheaper price at Costco.
Pop
Costco has cases of pop, including Coca-Cola and Sprite, for $15.29 and you get 32 cans that are 355 millilitres each.
That works out to a cost of $0.47 per can and just $0.13 per 100 millilitres.
Dollarama has mini cases of pop, including Pepsi and Schwepps, for $3 and you get six cans that are 222 millilitres each.

So, you get more bang for your buck at Costco!
