Montreal-based rapper and producer Ashanti Mutinta, better known as Backxwash, has revealed details of her upcoming album, Only Dust Remains, set to drop March 28 via her independent label, Ugly Hag. The announcement follows last year’s release of the sprawling eight-minute track “Wake Up,” which served as a powerful reminder of her lyrical and sonic ambition. A new single from the album is slated for release on February 27.
Only Dust Remains is Backxwash’s first full-length project since concluding her critically lauded trilogy with 2022’s His Happiness Shall Come First Even Though We Are Suffering. That trilogy began with 2020’s God Has Nothing to Do With This Leave Him Out of It, a Polaris Prize-winning record that solidified her status as one of Canada’s most innovative voices in hip hop. The trilogy’s second instalment, I Lie Here Buried With My Rings and My Dresses (2021), and its brooding conclusion explored themes of trauma, spirituality, and identity, set against a backdrop of experimental production that blurred the boundaries between rap, metal, and industrial music.
Details about Only Dust Remains are sparse, but a press release hints at a departure—or perhaps an evolution—from the abrasive textures that characterized her previous work. The new record is said to incorporate more complex, melodic soundscapes while maintaining her penchant for poetic, introspective lyrics.
Backxwash’s announcement lands at a pivotal moment for the artist, whose work continues to challenge genre conventions. Her raw and unflinching narratives, coupled with her genre-bending production, have earned her a dedicated following and critical acclaim across the music world.
