Winter is about to come in full force to Metro Vancouver, and things are looking chilly for a while. A messy mix of weather is set to hit the South Coast over the next few days, and cold temperatures are expected to last into the first half of February.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands, the Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound, Whistler, and the Fraser Valley.

It warns of a « wintery mix of weather » impacting the areas going into next week. On Friday, most places will see rain with a rise of temperatures, with the North Shore expected to see « significant rainfall amounts, » but don’t be fooled. Cold is coming throughout the region late Friday afternoon and early evening. Environment Canada warned that this cold front could mean slippery conditions on Friday night.

Moving into the weekend, flurries and more cold is expected. Snow accumulation is also likely in many areas of the South Coast, but exact measurements are unclear right now.

The chilly trend will continue into next week, with « very cold and dry air » expected over the South Coast, causing temperatures to be 5-8C below seasonal.

The Weather Network said that this long-lasting cold is thanks to a « giant blockage in the upper-level pattern over Western Canada » called a ‘Rex block’. A rex block causes stagnant weather for days at a time and is expected to keep B.C. dealing with frigid conditions « well into at least the first half of February. »

The South Coast will be layering up for the foreseeable future!
