When one thinks of legendary metal cities, our minds often drift to the mythic landscapes of Europe or the sprawling metropolises of the U.S., home to vast and thriving underground scenes.
Cornwall, Ontario, however, is not the first place that comes to mind as a cultural epicenter where greatness is forged.
Yet, against all odds, a thunderous force has emerged, as if the gods of heavy metal themselves have blessed this quiet town nestled between Montreal and Ottawa.
Cornwall’s own Don’t Tell Sarah has unleashed their debut album, Garagemahal—named after their jam space—and it stands as one of the finest metal records I’ve ever heard.
Blending elements of classic heavy metal, thrash, stoner rock, and pure rock ‘n’ roll, Garagemahal has been a staple in my daily rotation since its release.
The closest comparison I can draw is Alabama Thunderpussy’s Open Fire, an album I consider a flawless 10/10.
From the opening track, Party Animal, the album explodes with a funky, upbeat bass riff before transitioning into a high-energy stoner rock groove. Vocalist Alex commands attention with his distinctive, powerhouse delivery, layering his vocals over the riff as it builds in intensity. As the song progresses, the tempo accelerates, culminating in a climactic crescendo punctuated by fierce death metal growls.
The album twists and turns through a dynamic landscape, offering everything a rock and metal fan could crave—soaring guitar solos, thunderous heavy metal riffs, jaw-dropping vocals that will make you say, “Damn, this guy has pipes,” and one of the most electrifying bass intros on Hindsight, complemented by explosive and intricate drumming.
A special shoutout is also due to Desolation Studio, where the album was recorded and mixed. Thomas deserves just as much praise as the band for capturing Garagemahal’s sonic power. The production quality is exceptional, featuring crisp yet clear guitars, powerful vocals, and a rhythm section that delivers a powerful punch.
Garagemahal is a flawless 10/10 album with zero skips and zero notes. A perfect metal record that has already secured a spot on my Album of the Year shortlist and will remain in heavy rotation for a long time to come.
