Montreal-based artist Magi Merlin has released an unexpected four-track EP titled “A Weird Little Dog,” arriving just before she embarks on a North American tour supporting contemporary jazz musician Nubya Garcia.
The new collection marks Merlin’s first release since her 2022 EP “Gone Girl,” which garnered attention from publications like Complex, Nylon, and CBC Music. Unlike its predecessor, “A Weird Little Dog” sees Merlin stepping into production duties alongside frequent collaborator Funkywhat, pushing further into what she describes as “broken R&B.”

“It feels like a new start, an exercise in having faith in the listener,” Merlin said of the EP, which blends elements of glitch pop, neo-soul, indietronica, and ’90s electronic music. “I feel like I am a weird little dog. One of many on this earth but unique in my own way.”
The EP arrives with a music video for “see!igetit,” directed by Walid Jabri and Merlin herself. According to the artist, the track addresses societal priorities and systemic issues: “We blame each other for the issues caused by a flawed system and the people who benefit from it.”

Since releasing “Gone Girl,” Merlin has performed at major Canadian festivals including Osheaga and Montreal Jazz Fest, and supported acts like Noga Erez and Omar Apollo. She also recently made her acting debut in Chandler Levack’s film “Mile End Kicks,” alongside “Euphoria” star Barbie Ferreira.
The North American tour with Nubya Garcia begins April 4 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and includes stops in Brooklyn, Toronto, Chicago, Vancouver, and Los Angeles. Merlin will also perform several Canadian festival dates later this summer, including Ottawa Jazz Festival in June.
“A Weird Little Dog” is available now on cassette and digital platforms, alongside a standalone double single “Bip / 9volt” released last November. These releases offer a glimpse of what the artist has planned for the coming year as she continues to develop her multidisciplinary creative practice.
