Montreal metal collective World on Alert have released a video for “They Came From the Pleiades,” a heavy, slow-burning instrumental from their debut EP. Animated by vocalist and visual artist Max Rex, the video leans into sci-fi imagery, pairing well with the track’s shifting moods and layered guitar work.
At just over eight minutes, “They Came From the Pleiades” is the EP’s most sprawling track—an instrumental that moves from tight, thrash-rooted riffing into more open, proggy territory. It features guitar work from Alex Walsh and Mutank’s Costa Skoulikas, both mainstays in the Montreal scene. The video marks the third visual from the band’s self-titled debut, following “Insecurities” and “Freedom in Disguise.”
The project came together under the direction of Gino LaPosta, best known for his work in CroMagnum. Like many musicians during the early pandemic years, LaPosta used the break from live shows to explore new sounds. What started as a home recording project eventually evolved into a fully collaborative effort, drawing in friends and peers from the local metal circuit.
The EP’s five tracks each feature a rotating cast, including vocalists Justyn Vynn (Orchad), John Vincelli (Void Within), and Armen Apekian (Ashes of Eden), among others. With each song featuring a different mix of collaborators, the EP manages to stay grounded even as it shifts between styles and textures—from more straightforward thrash moments to cleaner, melodic sections that nod toward prog and even pop-rock structures.
LaPosta hasn’t gone into detail about the inspiration behind “They Came From the Pleiades,” but without vocals in the mix, there’s plenty of space for the guitars and layered rhythms to speak for themselves.
