Toronto-based singer-songwriter Anjulie and Montreal-born roots artist Kaïa Kater have been named recipients of the 2025 Her Music Awards, an annual initiative presented by the SOCAN Foundation with support from Anthem Entertainment.
Now in its fifth year, the awards aim to recognize and support emerging and mid-career women-identifying music creators across Canada. This year marks the first time the prize money has been doubled—from $5,000 to $10,000 each—thanks to increased sponsorship from Anthem. The recipients were announced at a private ceremony held at George Restaurant in Toronto on April 10.
Anjulie, a JUNO Award winner with songwriting credits that include Nicki Minaj, Diplo, and Kelly Clarkson, has recently seen a resurgence in visibility. In 2024, she co-wrote “Eat Your Man,” a track performed by Nelly Furtado and Dom Dolla, which received a JUNO nomination. Her own releases, including “Chai and Sunshine,” continue to blend pop, EDM, and diasporic influences drawn from her Guyanese-Indian background.
Kaïa Kater, whose roots stretch from Quebec and the Caribbean to Appalachia, has carved out a space at the intersection of folk, jazz, and cinematic storytelling. Her latest album, Strange Medicine, which features collaborations with Taj Mahal and Aoife O’Donovan, won the 2025 JUNO Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. Kater has also gained recognition in the film and television space, scoring the BET+ series The Porter and contributing to My Dead Friend Zoe, which earned the Audience Award at this year’s SXSW.
Also recognized was Margaret McGuffin, CEO of Music Publishers Canada, who received a newly introduced Her Music Industry Award for her leadership and advocacy work within the Canadian music publishing sector.
Applications for the Her Music Awards are assessed on artistic merit, career momentum, and industry impact. The awards are one of several initiatives by the SOCAN Foundation aimed at addressing gender equity in Canada’s music landscape.
