Donuts at Tim Hortons are a classic, but how do the baked goods stack up?
Well, I ordered donuts from Tims and compared them to Krispy Kreme donuts to find out where the best ones are.
Both of these places have quite a few donuts on the menu.
There are a lot of different flavours at Tims and Krispy Kreme, though.
So, I ordered the five that are most similar: chocolate glazed, sprinkles, custard filled, chocolate dipped and plain glazed.
Here’s a comparison of Tim Hortons and Krispy Kreme donuts, including prices, ratings and which shop has the better baked goods.
Chocolate glazed donut
TIM HORTONS
The chocolate glazed donut at Tim Hortons is a cakey donut with lots of chocolate flavour, which I love.
It’s soft and a bit airy with a little crunch from the glaze.
This donut is sugary but not too sweet.
Price: $1.59
Rating: 4 out of 5
KRISPY KREME
The glazed chocolate cake donut at Krispy Kreme isn’t very chocolatey or sweet, even though it’s a chocolate donut covered in a sugary glaze.
It’s a bit dense, but that’s not a bad thing, in my opinion.
The glaze is a good contrast in texture and taste to the cakiness of the donut.
Price: $1.90
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Which donut is better? Tim Hortons chocolate glazed donut.
Sprinkles donut
TIM HORTONS
The sprinkles donut at Tim Hortons is a vanilla dip.
It’s not really dense, but not that airy either.
In my opinion, there are just too many sprinkles on this donut. It makes it too crunchy, which distracts from the donut because all I think about while taking a bite is why there are so many sprinkles.
There’s not much vanilla flavour from the dip, so the donut is lacking in taste.
Price: $1.59
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
KRISPY KREME
The sprinkles baked good at Krispy Kreme is a strawberry iced donut.
It’s soft and tender with a few sprinkles on top that add a pleasant crunch without distracting from the donut.
The strawberry dip isn’t too strong a flavour, which is nice because I was expecting it to be overpowering.
I don’t even like strawberry-flavoured baked goods, so it’s surprising that I like this donut.
Price: $1.90
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Which donut is better? Krispy Kreme strawberry iced with sprinkles donut.
Custard-filled donut
TIM HORTONS
At Tim Hortons, the Boston cream donut is a classic.
It has a lot of chocolate on top, and the donut is a bit too dense. But the custard is very creamy, so that balances it out.
Also, it’s not too sweet even with the chocolate glaze and the custard.
Price: $1.59
Rating: 3 out of 5
KRISPY KREME
The chocolate iced custard filled donut at Krispy Kreme is similar to the Boston cream donut at Tims.
The chocolate on top is so smooth and soft, the donut is fluffy, and the custard is really creamy.
It’s not overwhelmingly sweet, even with the custard filling and the chocolate glaze on top.
Price: $1.90
Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Which donut is better? Krispy Kreme chocolate iced custard-filled donut.
Chocolate dipped donut
TIM HORTONS
The chocolate dip donut at Tim Hortons doesn’t have much flavour, in my opinion.
It’s just a regular donut with some chocolate on top.
So, that means it’s not too sweet but nothing special either.
Price: $1.59
Rating: 2.5 out of 5
KRISPY KREME
The chocolate iced glazed donut at Krispy Kreme isn’t too sweet, even with the chocolate on top.
The donut itself is light and airy, which is good because not only is there a chocolate dip, but the entire donut is covered in a sugary glaze.
So, it would have an overpowering flavour if the donut weren’t so light.
Price: $1.90
Rating: 4 out of 5
Which donut is better? Krispy Kreme chocolate iced glazed donut.
Plain glazed donut
TIM HORTONS
The old fashioned plain glazed is the Tim Hortons donut that’s closest to the Krispy Kreme Original Glazed.
It’s a cakey donut, so it’s not very light, but it’s still fluffy.
Also, the glaze gives the donut a nice crunch without being overly sweet.
Price: $1.59
Rating: 4.5 out of 5
KRISPY KREME
Krispy Kreme’s Original Glazed is a classic at the donut shop.
It’s a soft and light donut that it’s almost like eating air, which I don’t love.
There’s a bit of crunch from the glaze, but it’s not enough to balance out the lightness of the donut.
The flavour isn’t too sweet, even though the donut is covered in a sugary glaze.
Price: $1.90
Rating: 4 out of 5
Which donut is better? Tim Hortons plain glazed.
WHO HAS THE BETTER DONUTS?
In my opinion, just two of these five donuts are better at Tim Hortons: the chocolate glazed and the plain glazed.
Three of the five donuts I tried are better at Krispy Kreme: strawberry iced with sprinkles, chocolate iced custard-filled, and chocolate iced glazed
So, Krispy Kreme is the winner overall when it comes to taste.
But when it comes to price, Tim Hortons definitely has Krispy Kreme beat.
It costs $14.49 for a six-pack of donuts at Tim Hortons, while a dozen donuts costs $16 at Krispy Kreme.
Also, single donuts are cheaper at Tims by $0.31 each.
Overall, I think I’ll reach for the Krispy Kreme donuts when given the choice between baked goods from the donut shop and donuts from Tim Hortons.
These prices are confirmed at the time of publishing, but they can change at any time. Taxes and fees may not be included.
