Environment Canada has issued several weather warnings for the city on January 27, and it’s shaping up to be a wild day.

Southwesterly winds are expected to reach up to 100 km/h this afternoon and evening, particularly in Montérégie, Greater Montreal and other areas such as Lanaudière and northern Quebec.

Wind gusts of that speed could cause tree branches to snap and send loose objects flying. Power outages can also occur, so make sure you’ve charged your devices and stocked up on candles.

As if that weren’t enough, snow squalls are expected to hit Montreal on Monday night too, bringing periods of heavy snow and drastically reduced visibility. This could make travel dangerous, especially during the evening commute. Visibility may drop to near zero, so plan ahead if you need to be on the road.

Following the snow, an arctic air mass will sweep across the province, causing temperatures to plummet. As a result, Montreal is expected to see lows of -15 C on Tuesday. So if you thought the wind was bad, brace yourself for the bitter cold that’s coming right behind it.

While snowfall totals for Montreal are expected to be minimal, areas surrounding the city may see higher accumulations.

Environment Canada is urging caution for anyone who has to travel, as sudden changes in the weather could make conditions unpredictable.

So if you don’t absolutely need to be outside tonight, it might be a good idea to stay cozy indoors. Stay safe out there, Montreal!
