Canada, it’s time to check your pantries again — yet another round of food recalls has been issued, and this time, they’re affecting everything from pantry staples like tahini and canned tuna to sweet treats like chocolate.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has flagged multiple products for potential health risks, including salmonella contamination, undeclared allergens and even yeast contamination.
This comes just over a week after two other product recalls due to salmonella, including the recent egg recall and another alert that was linked to a serious outbreak with 61 confirmed illnesses and 17 hospitalizations.
Now, these latest food recalls in Canada are impacting several popular brands, including Metro’s house label Irresistibles, Little Gourmet Organic and No Sugar Company.
If you’ve stocked up on any of these items recently, it’s worth taking a second look at your recent grocery haul to make sure nothing in your kitchen has landed on the growing recall list.
Here’s everything you need to know about six of the latest food recalls in Canada.
D. Effe T. pastries
Recalled products:
- D. Effe T. Lemon Delight, 1180 g (1 box x 9 pieces)
- D. Effe T. Tartlet with Forest Fruits, 1170 g (1 box x 9 pieces)
Recall reason: Euro Harvest Wholesale Bakery and Importations Piu Che Dolci Inc. are recalling certain D. Effe T.-brand pastries due to possible salmonella contamination. These desserts were distributed in Ontario and may have been sold clerk-served or in smaller packages without a label identifying the brand or product name. If you’re not sure if the desserts you have are affected, you can call the store where you bought them to ask.
The CFIA warns that food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, especially if you’re young, elderly, pregnant or have a weakened immune system. Symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The recall was triggered as part of a CFIA investigation into the recent pastry recall and salmonella outbreak, with one reported illness potentially linked to these products. The agency notes that further lab testing is ongoing to confirm the connection.
